Just outside Melbourne, in the vibrant community of Frankston, something special is brewing for local coffee aficionados.
Every Monday, the Bloom Pop-Up Café in Frankston opens its doors with a mission that goes beyond caffeine, because Bloom is a donation-based café that’s operated by people with disabilities.
Bloom Café is the result of a partnership between Frankston Life Community, a local not-for-profit dedicated to fostering social connection, and Living Life Support Services, a disability support organisation. Bloom also supports the broader community, including initiatives to assist people experiencing homelessness.
The welcoming coffee spot is proudly part of the international Chatty Café Scheme; an initiative designed to reduce loneliness and foster social connection. Bloom Café takes it a step further by empowering people with disabilities by offering real-world experience, life skills, and connection.
Susanne Whitby, Frankston Life General Manager, says Bloom Café helps to break barriers, build relationships, and create a safe, inclusive space where everyone is valued.
“At Bloom Café, our people are given the space to learn essential life skills such as how to interact with others, take orders, and engage in everyday conversation. The café operates entirely on donations and runs as a pop-up initiative, contributing to the community in meaningful ways,” says Susanne.
“Bloom supports individuals with disabilities by helping them develop practical life skills and encouraging community engagement. It’s designed for people who might be feeling isolated or who need support in building confidence and independence.”
Susanne says she has seen a significant change in the young team since they’ve been serving at the café.
For Neil Jarvis, Gallagher Security Sales Manager – Victoria and Tasmania, it was an easy decision to support the café’s efforts.
“Gallagher is big on community. After being in the Frankston/Langwarrin area for most of my life, it’s nice to find a great cause in the area to support,” says Neil.
Each of Gallagher Security Australia’s state-based teams receive funds to support local community initiatives.
“I first heard about Bloom Café through friends and after speaking to the wider Victoria/Tasmania team at Gallagher, we were set on supporting this fantastic community-focused initiative,” says Neil.
“At Gallagher Security, our commitment to supporting our communities reflects our values. Susanne and the team do a great job helping share important life skills, and we’re very proud to play a small part in supporting the café.
“Bloom Café aligns with Gallagher’s values of giving back and protecting what matters most. For us, we’re focused on giving back to the local community and ensuring we’re supporting those who support us.
“We look to back community groups who rely on donations and sponsorships from like-minded Aussies. Locally, our team is also proud to support SES Kilmore, part of the Victoria State Emergency Service, a volunteer-based organisation that provides vital emergency assistance.
With a little support from Gallagher, Bloom Café continues to provide a platform for people with disabilities to thrive while the lucky Frankston community can enjoy perfectly brewed tea and coffee, and freshly baked muffins.
