New Port Richey, FL — As it marks its 100th anniversary, the iconic Richey Suncoast Theatre is not only celebrating a century of cultural contributions but also looking boldly toward the future. The beloved community venue, which has anchored New Port Richey’s historic downtown since 1926, is undergoing a renaissance, blending rich history with smart technology to support its next century of performances and public programs.
At the heart of that transformation is a strategic investment in security. In a move that reflects both preservation and innovation, Richey Suncoast Theatre has partnered with global technology leader, Gallagher Security, to modernize its access control - a critical upgrade that helped bolster their application for designation as a historic property through the National Park Service.
“Our Gallagher system gives us a level of control that enhances our day-to-day efficiency and safeguards our theatre’s unique character,” says Doug Jones, Treasurer and Board Member of the Richey Suncoast Theatre. “It’s a clear example of how smart security planning can support both operational needs and preservation goals.”
From Past to Present: Reinventing Access in a Century-Old Structure
The Richey Suncoast Theatre serves as a vibrant cultural hub for the local community, hosting plays, trainings, workshops, and more. But operating a modern venue in a nearly 100-year-old building comes with significant challenges, especially when it comes to managing access.
“For years, everyone just ended up with a key, which were easily lost,” says Jones. “We had no choice but to rekey the entire building each year. That practice was both inefficient and expensive, especially for a non-profit in a growth phase.”
The transition to Gallagher’s Command Centre access control system changed everything. Staff, instructors, and vendors now receive unique PIN codes or mobile credentials with schedules that automatically expire, eliminating physical key management entirely. Access can be granted or revoked remotely, reducing staff time on-site and improving operational flexibility.
“It’s phenomenal,” Jones adds. “We can manage access remotely, monitor who’s in the building, and ensure every door is secure without having to be on-site. That capability helps us create a more secure building, but it also gives our dedicated staff time back in their day - for a non-profit, that’s an incredible gift.”
Enabling Growth Through Infrastructure
What began as a simple access upgrade has unlocked broader strategic value. With streamlined security, the theatre has expanded programming dramatically, growing from a modest seasonal schedule to over 150 events annually. Delivery coordination has improved, the risk of damage to historic areas has been minimized, and operations are more efficient than ever.
“Our rapid growth has primarily been driven by our talented staff,” says Jones, “but it also wouldn’t have happened without a strategic reinvestment in infrastructure like Command Centre.”
A Perfect Match of Technology and Heritage
As the theatre embarks on its second century, Gallagher’s system continues to serve as a bridge between legacy and longevity.
“Gallagher is a key part of how we’ve been able to grow without inflating our operating costs,” Jones said. “The system is flexible, modern, and works in a building that’s nearly a hundred years old. It’s a perfect match.”
Luis Colon, Director of Sales – East and LATAM at Gallagher Security, agrees. “We’re honored to help Richey Suncoast Theatre protect a space that means so much to its community. This project exemplifies how modern technology can preserve historic spaces without compromising their soul.”
